This is a terrific deal for the Rockies. They needed a third baseman and they needed a play that doesn't strike out a lot to bat second in the lineup. Melvin Mora fits both of those roles and the Rockies are rounding out their starting lineup with this move. Because Mora puts the ball in play, it will help advance the leadoff hitter when he gets on base.
The one main aspect the Rockies lack is power. Jonny Gomes would be a good investment to play left field and hit in the middle of the order.
