Gary Matthews Jr. will not contribute anything of significance to the Mets this season. He doesn't get on base enough. He doesn't hit for a high average or power. He is a subpar outfielder. He doesn't fit any role a major league team would need.
The Mets need to continue looking for a first baseman. Rich Aurilia, Nomar Garciaparra, Adam LaRoche, Greg Norton, or Chad Tracy would all be good fits for the Mets.
